Pointers for Practice: Effective Review Conference Practice

  1. The focus of the review should be on evaluating quality changes to the daily lived experience of the child/ren in the family and in light of these changes, or lack of them determining actions such as continuation of the plan.
  2. Specific evidence is necessary that parenting has improved and had a positive impact on the child/ren to warrant de-registration. This evidence should include the child’s experience as well as practitioner observation
  3. The core group should submit reports, that combined, provide a comprehensive overview of the work undertaken by the core group and its effectiveness
  4. Parents engagement with the plan should be assessed separately.
  5. Engagement of child/ren in the review process is essential. It is important to establish whether they believe the plan is having a positive impact on their lives.
  6. Members of the review should try and understand why parent/s may not have engaged with particular aspects of the plan and whether changes to the plan could promote engagement.
  7. The family should receive positive feedback for any engagement with the plan that has led to positive outcomes for the child.
  8. When considering progress, it is important to recognise the impact of staff workloads, sickness, lack of resources etc on the implementation of the plan.
  9. Celebrate success towards achieving the final child-focused outcomes.
